It all started with pants

At 18, Marc starts his first business, MGI Distributing, manufacturing active wear for men. His clothing is carried by health clubs and specialty retailers throughout Toronto. The company is forced to close when a large retail customer goes bankrupt and doesn’t pay.

Welcome to the corporate world

Marc graduates from college and is immediately hired as the VP of Marketing for an upstart corporate seminar company. A power struggle between the two founding partners results in Marc being let go after six months. A chance meeting with a high school friend gets Marc involved in acting part time. He goes on to appear in numerous commercials in Canada and the United States.

From the basement

From his parent’s basement, Marc starts GoldPro, a company that provides gold plating services for cars. After less than a month, Marc decides to go from a service provider to a product supplier. Demand for the product is huge. After a year the company moves to a commercial space. With the demand on his time from GoldPro, Marc leaves the acting industry.

That's all folks

GoldPro has become the largest specialty auto product manufacturer in the country with six unique product lines, supplying over 2,400 new car dealers, car detailing franchises, and a national chain of auto glass installers. However, Marc is mentally and emotionally burnt out. He sees changing trends in the auto industry and sells GoldPro, retiring at age thirty-three. Six years later GM and Chrysler declare bankruptcy.

Here we go again

Marc’s wife, Natalie, opens her dental practice and tasks him with managing her marketing. This inspires Marc to start FourWord Marketing, a full service agency focused on small businesses and startups. The company grows quickly and within months Marc has assembled a talented team of designers and specialists.

Something to say

Marc starts receiving invitations to speak to local business groups about branding, websites, and email marketing. Realizing that customer experience was the biggest factor in GoldPro’s success, Marc decides to focus his energy on researching and teaching effective customer service strategies.

2011

When word got out that Marc had been asked to be a part of a project connected to Oprah Winfrey, interest in his speaking increased dramatically.

Oprah who?

Marc writes an article for Biznik, a business social media site, that goes viral. This leads to an offer by The Oprah Winfrey Network’s President of Digital Media to be part of a new website dedicated to serving small business owners. Marc is given the label of “Canada’s customer experience superstar.” The project never gets beyond the development stage.

Any comments?

A viral video of a man being physically dragged off a United Airlines flight leads to Marc being interviewed on multiple television news channels for his opinions. This leads to him becoming the go-to resource for media outlets covering stories about bad customer service.
