Like many restaurants, this one provides suggested tipping options at the bottom of the bill. Just one problem. None of the dollar amounts are correct based on the percentages.
18% = $36.72 (not $51.48)
20% = $40.80 (not $57.20)
22% = $44.88 (not $62.92)
Could it be that people are not that good at math? Or that they just don’t bother to notice the discrepancy?
Regardless, this is a classic case of a business taking advantage of a situation that negatively impacts the customer. (The fact the customer may not notice is besides the point.)
This customer noticed and was not happy. She left a note and shared it on social media. Who know how many people she personally shared her story with.
The business may have lost a customer for life. And possibly many more.
Taking care of customers means more than politeness and good service. It takes an attitude of care. Making sure the customer can never look back on the experience and say, “I got taken advantage of.”
It’s easy to be honest when people are looking. It says something about the character of the business when no one is.
Protect your customers – even from themselves – and they will thank you with their loyalty.
